Thanks for a fantastic post. This is one o...Kevin,

Thanks for a fantastic post. This is one of the few places I've seen where Deacon's work is read dialectically. (Like you, I'm not sure whether I'm using that word correctly or not.) I just mean the idea that something and its negation can in time create a higher-order synthesis that subsumes them both. If that's dialectics, then great!

Michael Hartwig's review of the book is another place where dialectics figures prominently, in case you haven't checked it out yet. Hartwig (who was a student of Bhaskar) embraces the absentism completely. What I still struggle to understand is why talk of absent things and powers (which invites a kind of mysterianism and has made the book off-putting to so many people) when you can talk of relations and a relational/dialectical logic that to my mind is much simpler? Also, am I the only one who thinks this talk of presence and absence assumes the very substance metaphysics (time as a sequence of instances, phenomena as individuated things) that Deacon wants to overthrow?

Anyway, this is the riches book I've read in quite some time and I would totally be down to diagram it, like you suggest here. I also had the exact same question ("Did Aristotle nail it?") after I was done. I think Deacon would say yes wrt his typology of causes but no wrt how he classified particular cases of causality.

Anyway, really enjoyed reading this.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08450007307269380129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5369568.post-74736932486510236952017-04-05T12:54:09.751-05:002017-04-05T12:54:09.751-05:00also see pages 21-23 of the Kobek book for more of...also see pages 21-23 of the Kobek book for more of the same theme but specifically discussing Jack Kirby.Kevin Hhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05387226653540894960noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5369568.post-80832267615064438932017-03-11T11:17:18.550-06:002017-03-11T11:17:18.550-06:00Cutting room floor:

Everyone from Marvel down to Boom! and Image and FB and D&Q, from Retrofit, Kilgore, Breakdown, and Kus. What are the dubious labor practices? Who are the Kirby's of right now? We talked about Jack Kirby in class yesterday, in the context of him being known as Jack "the King" Kirby. Why was he the King? Who are the "kings" now? (who are the wizards? flip genders, etc. This kind of discourse is basically gross, if we loses sight of the class analysis).

Or

What about this paragraph? Is it right? Reading this paragraph is probably different for "creative types" vs. "business people." Business is all for brands, assembly lines, etc. because it's efficient. Pop Music, Comics, Theater, Symphonies, difficult Poetry, all are pretty inefficient industries, basically, due for some disruption. Creative destruction, etc. "Destroy All Comics."Kevin Hhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05387226653540894960noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5369568.post-54120153532518824362017-03-09T18:49:37.457-06:002017-03-09T18:49:37.457-06:00Yes this is the same as in Or Else #5 (long out of...Yes this is the same as in Or Else #5 (long out of print).
Kevin Hhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05387226653540894960noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5369568.post-25333171953145001012017-03-07T14:11:24.380-06:002017-03-07T14:11:24.380-06:00Bradford W.
